 RE: Upgrades Slated for GWM Site of Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital

Smiths Falls, ON – Close to $269,816 will be spent at the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital thanks to the Hospital Infrastructure Renewal Fund (HIRF) dollars allocated by the South East Local Health Integration Network.

HIRF grants were established to assist public hospitals in renewing their healthcare facilities. The HIRF grant supplements a hospital’s existing building renewal program and helps healthcare facilities address renewal needs on a priority basis.

“HIRF grants are essential in maintaining the physical structures of our hospital sites. The management team and staff are always generating ideas for ways to improve the physical plant,” said Linda Bisonette, President & CEO.

These infusions of cash for building upgrades and repairs are investments in patient care. Brian Allen, Vice President, Finance & Support Services stated, “As the Smiths Falls Site has recently undergone a major redevelopment, the grant monies will be mainly focussed on projects at the GWM Site.”

He also confirmed that a total of 16 projects have been put on the hospital’s “to do” list. He outlined a few of the projects slated to be completed at the GWM Site in the coming fiscal year such as:

  • Renovate patient bathrooms;
  • new flooring in patient care areas;
  • upgrades to air handling units

“This is not only an investment in our hospital, but in our healthcare community. We are grateful to the South East LHIN for recognizing our needs,” stated Linda Bisonette.

Hospitals can use their HIRF grant to develop approved minor capital projects that extend the useful life, or result in an improvement in the quality or functionality of hospital facilities, but that will not result in an increase in operating funding from the ministry.
