10th Anniversary of Dialysis Program at Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital

Smiths Falls, ON – December 13th, 2009 will mark the 10th anniversary of the Dialysis program which is jointly sponsored by Kingston General Hospital and Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital.  The success in the ten years has been significant to say the least.  The organization has had in excess of 30,000 treatments to patients with overall patient satisfaction continuing to be excellent.

In the beginning, the program treated an average of three patients three days per week.  Through the ten years, the program has developed and grown and now treats 27 patients three days per week close to home.

“The commitment of patient care on a daily basis from everyone associated with the dialysis unit is truly inspiring,” noted Tim Carter, Chair, Board of Directors.

“We are proud to be Lanark County’s only hospital-based dialysis program serving Perth, Smiths Falls, Westport and Carleton Place.  We are also the only program of its kind in the South East LHIN with the exception of Kingston General Hospital,” said Pat Corrigan, Patient Care Manager, ER/ICU

Today, the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital is highlighting progress, dedication, accomplishments and innovation.  “I take this opportunity to offer my heartfelt congratulations to the staff, physicians and donors for their diligence and commitment to improving our local healthcare system,” commented Todd Stepanuik, President & CEO.

Prior to the addition of this service 10 years ago, patients had to access dialysis treatments in Ottawa, Brockville and Kingston and which required the patient to travel three times per week, at times through ice and snow, to receive this life saving treatment.

“This program is a great example of partnerships focussed on improving patient care and improving access to patient care.  The relationship between Kingston General Hospital and Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital has been exemplary in terms of working together for all of the right reasons,” stated Linda Bisonette, Vice President, Patient Care Services & CNE.
